Supporting our older people

Through our partnership with Tauranga Foodbank we have recently identified that many pensioners are going without meals because they can’t afford food. There are many reasons for this, including access issues due to weather or mobility or because the finances simply don’t stretch that far.

Good Neighbour have teamed up with Tauranga Foodbank, Age Concern, Here to Help U, and Tauranga City Council to offer free and friendly food support delivered right to the door.

Open to all those over the age of 65, a visit to the website or a simple phone call to Here to Help U at 0800 568 273 will start the ball rolling on a food support pack delivery. This includes staple food items, ready-made meals and basic pantry items for 3-4 days.

The service has been popular with lots of positive feedback on the delivery service and ready-made meals. In the first month 33 deliveries were made.

This older generation are very resilient and can do most things without asking for help (some may call that stubborn), but we have enjoyed being able to show them that they are valuable and cared for in the community and there is genuine help available.

If you are struggling or know of someone else who needs some food support, please don’t feel shy to reach out.

Following this initiative, we are also pleased to be involved in the upcoming Spring Fest – Celebrating International Day of the Older Person. This community-led event has many activities planned across Tauranga throughout the week of 1 – 7 October.
